The Downtown Improvement Grant Program is designed to stimulate historic preservation, promote architectural appreciation and initiate aesthetic improvement to historic buildings in Shelbyville, Indiana.

The program is administered by Mainstreet Shelbyville, Inc. and reviewed by their design committee.
All completed and eligible applications located within the main street district will be considered by the design committee and submitted to the Main Street Board of Directors for final approval.
Program Objectives

Encourage preservation and rehabilitation that visually enhances downtown properties leading to increased property values.

Stimulate economic development by providing incentives to create an aesthetically pleasing area to attract new businesses and customers.

Maximize existing resources to complement our historic and economic revitalization efforts in our district.
Facade Grant Program
This is intended to provide financial assistance for exterior building façade improvements in the historic commercial district in downtown Shelbyville, Indiana.
The goal of the program is to attract shoppers and catalyze investment through improved aesthetics and preservation of downtown buildings.
- The maximum award of of the grant: $15,000.
- The applicant must provide a 50 percent match.

Interior Renovation Program
Mainstreet Shelbyville offers this grant program for new or existing businesses within historic downtown Shelbyville, Indiana.
The purpose of the grant program is to provide funding for interior renovations that will help start, improve or expand a commercial business.
- All applicants and work performed will have to meet certain criteria outlined in the application.
- The maximum amount of the grant: $5,000 (non-matching).

Outdoor Amenities Program
This grant program is a partnership with the City of Shelbyville, Indiana to provide options for furniture and other equipment to enhance the downtown patron’s experience.
The City of Shelbyville and Mainstreet Shelbyville utilized the following concepts to guide its design choices: continuity, durability and a complimentary design to the Public Square.
- The applicant shall choose selections from the provided design manual and submit the application below to Mainstreet Shelbyville for consideration.
- This grant program is an 80/20 matching grant, the applicant if approved will be financially responsible for 20 percent of the total purchase price.
- The maximum grant award is $5,000 per business/location.

Downtown Business Start-Up Grant
The Downtown Business Start-Up Grant is designed to invigorate the heart of our city by providing financial assistance to new businesses setting up in the downtown area. This grant offers up to $15,000 to eligible entrepreneurs to cover initial costs such as renovations, equipment, marketing,and other startup expenses.
Our goal is to support innovative and diverse businesses that will enhance the economic vitality and cultural vibrancy of our downtown community. By encouraging entrepreneurship and reducing financial barriers, we aim to create a thriving business environment that attracts residents and visitors alike. Applicants will be evaluated based on their business plan, potential for job creation and commitment to contributing positively to the downtown area.
